PART 2 of:
DIY Salon & Spa Items Series: Items You Can Make For Your Business

diy series

Having a salon and spa, you need to think of new innovative ways to make your business appealing and creative to gain more product sales or to keep your customer retention. One simple way is to show your customers that you are capable of making something for their treatment that they can either take home as a gift or to purchase afterwards, or have handmade luxury items as a special touch of aesthetics in your facility.
These items can consist of lotions, oils, scrubs, masks, etc. You can either purchase pre-made items with chemicals or unknown unnatural ingredients, or you can make something yourself with all natural ingredients and label it as handmade from your business.

From all readers of our last DIY blog, 65% wanted Part 2 of our series to be “DIY Tanning Enhancers”.

Here are 3 creations you can make to prep, enhance, & extend you & your customer’s tan:

PREP

The best way to keep your tan is to prep your skin to be ready for the tanning or spray tan session. When your session is coming up, exfoliate so your skin will be clean and ready to be more moisturized. Getting rid of dry excess skin layers will grab a hold of the color better allowing a deeper, bronze tan.
Try this Pina Colada Pre-Tan Scrub that is gentle on the body and will also help cellulite reduction because of the coffee grounds.
What you need:
1. 1/2 cup ground rice
2. 1/2 cup coconut milk
3. 1/4 cup brown sugar or coffee grounds
4. 1 1/2 tablespoons of grated ginger
5. Grinder/Processor
Grind the rice in a coffee grinder or food processor. Combine rice with coconut milk, brown sugar and ginger. Stir together until you get a thick paste.
Now it’s ready to apply over entire body, working in circular motions from the feet up. Rinse in the shower. Apply moisturizer.
You can use this once a week while building your tan. Store in refrigerator.

ENHANCE

Some people aren’t always aware that you should apply moisturizer before & after your tan. If your skin isn’t moisturized, it is not only difficult to develop a tan, but your tan will not last. Moisturized skin tans best. Moisturize the night before you tan and after you tan for optimum tanning results.
This recipe can be used for indoor & outdoor tanning because it is nourishing, offers a small amount of SPF, and helps focus the UV rays onto your skin to stimulate melanin production. This will overall make your tan appear quicker while holding the moisture.
What you need:
1. Coconut Oil – a great natural accelerator, rich in fatty acids, moisturizing
2. Lanolin – a natural emulsifying emollient, a binding agent that softens skin
3. Black Tea Bags – to make the nourishing colored tea water to mix it all together
4. Blender
First, boil a cup of hot water and add 4 tea bags. Let that steep for a few minutes. Then mix a ½ cup of the tea, ¼ cup of coconut oil, and a ¼ cup of lanolin in a blender until it forms together. Then start pouring the rest of the tea mixture until fully combined.
Now the self-tanning enhancer is ready to apply. This will keep in the fridge for up to 7 days.
Follow up with this or your favorite moisturizer mixed with a little bit of plain Cocoa powder.
Cocoa powder is rich in antioxidants and magnesium that help get cleanse you of harmful free radicals and repair your skin. The cocoa powder will also add a slight natural tint to enhance your color.

EXTEND

Once you have had your tanning session or spray tan and keep yourself moisturized, you can also create a DIY all natural tanning accelerator.
Like the enhancer, this lanolin-based cream is water resistant, and will even stay on in saltwater.
What you need:
1. 2 cups of distilled water
2. 2 green tea bags – has antioxidants that can rid your skin of impurities, mild UV barrier
3. ¼ cup of lanolin – waterproof and provides a bit of natural UV protection
4. 1 tsp sesame oil – accelerate your tan, as it darkens when exposed to light
5. 1 tsp Olive oil – rich in vitamin E, antioxidant with soothing properties to moisturize the skin & develop a golden tan
6. 1 tsp of carrot juice – increases natural darkening of the skin
7. Blender
Boil 1 cup of distilled water in a stainless steel pot. Add the green tea bags and brew for 20 minutes on low. Pour half of the tea into a blender. Put 1/4 cup of lanolin into the blender with the tea. As it warms up and melts, pour the sesame oil, olive oil, and carrot juice into the blender. Blend. Add the rest of the tea mixture until it blends together evenly and provides enough extender to last a few days.
Apply during days you are not tanning, so your skin has that continuous glow and is prepped for your next session. This will keep in the fridge for up to 7 days.
